Many people are excited about the prospect of starting their own business and liberating themselves from the rat race of a 9-to-5 job. Of course, many people underestimate the amount of time, effort, and money necessary to begin such an endeavor. During the first few years of your business (and perhaps longer) you may end up working longer hours in your own business than you would have at your previous job.

A regular 9-5 job can certainly trap a person with a prison which they feel they cannot escape. But starting your small business entails its own sense of responsibility that most people do not realize. In a normal job scenario, a person performs a particular function. In the early days of a new business venture, the business owner must typically fill a number of roles, especially if their start up capital is limited.

You see, the benefits of owning a small business are not so much that you can avoid a hard-working job, at least in the beginning. The benefits have much more to do with having a certain amount of independence and control over your own work, as well as a long-term prospect of earning more and doing something you love to do. Eventually, you may indeed exit the rat race altogether, but it may take a long time to achieve this kind of wealth with your business (and obviously, many people do not make it that far).

As a matter of fact, it may be a few years before your business is able to pay you a decent salary, or even before you turn a profit at all. Making reasonable and at times serious financial sacrifices and living within your means is important in most situations, but it becomes extremely important during the first years of your business when your financial survival can hinge on the small expenses that add up here and there. Many small business owners forgo a salary early in their new business which causes them to rely on savings.

For some people, the sacrifice is simply too great, and these kinds of people would not make it as an entrepreneur. However, committing yourself to delayed gratification can be well worth it if you value the opportunity to take charge of your own financial life and build the business of your dreams. When things get tougher, simply remind yourself of your long-term vision and goals and maintain a strict discipline in your spending until your business is firmly established.
