Achieving an Outstanding Life

Many people over the years have made a significant effort to study the qualities that lead to an outstanding life. Many books and articles have been written on the subject of goal setting and realizing your goals, and motivational speakers give lectures and speeches to thousands of people each year regarding how to get the most out of life. One quality, however, seems to be more important for success than any other.

A gentleman by the name of Kop Kopmeyer was well known for having written several books on the subject of success and achievement. Each of these works covered 250 success principles that Mr. Kopmeyer had discovered over more than 50 years of intense research. When you sum up all the principles covered in these books, you obviously come up with 1000 success principles.

That is a lot of principles for any person to study and try to assimilate even over the course of a lifetime. No doubt that each of these principles has some truth and can contribute to a person's overall success and achievement in life. However, the author was once asked by Brian Tracy (and probably by many other people over the years) to identify the most important principle for success.

Without reserve, this author and researcher who compiled 1000 success principles quickly identified the most significant principle: self-discipline. He simply stated that "self-discipline is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not."

He went on to explain that the other 999 success principles found in his books were important and contributed to success in one's career and overall life, but these other principles would be useless without a foundation of self-discipline. Self-discipline allows any person of average intelligence to rise above the more talented people through diligence and hard work. It is more important than a limited or extensive education or socioeconomic background and will lead to countless opportunities in life.

This is probably one of the most important principles you can ever learn in your life. Whether you want to focus on character development and become the best person you can be ethically and spiritually, or whether you want to focus on improving your career at the moment or getting into shape, self-discipline is the key.

Do yourself a favor and think about this sentence once again. "Self-discipline is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not." This statement may not sound flashy or seductive, and the heavens did not suddenly part or the earth shake when you read them. Yet this very simple principle can have more of a positive impact on your life than any other principle of goal setting or success because it forces you to work on yourself and your own self-control and self mastery even harder than you work on your job.
